Description

For photographers, light is our best friend, and it comes to us from all angles. Front light and back light are fairly easy to deal with, but side light can be a challenge. In this premium video, Outdoor Photography Guideā€™s David Johnston shows you how to edit for side light.

In Lightroom, David processes his image of cypress trees with shadows on one side and sunlight on the other. To add contrast, he decreases shadows and increases highlights. He is trying to separate sunlight from shadow. To add color contrast, he adjusts the luminance and saturation tools in both the highlights and shadows.

The goal is to retain texture of the original image. Using brush tools, David isolates the trees and adjusts shadows and highlights. With the Lightroom texture tools, he makes adjustments in texture, clarity and dehaze. The resulting edited image is gorgeous.
