The most colorful light for photography takes place twice a day—at sunrise and sunset—so these times are the best to capture water reflections in photography. Professional photographer Ian Plant recommends beginning to take photographs about an hour before the actual sunrise. That way, you are there as the first light enters the water landscape you wish to shoot and the reflections of that light on the water. He says that as the sun rises, the light becomes more intense, and the reflections on the water become correspondingly stronger.

It’s important to shoot photographs of the same subject at each stage of the light to see the different effects achieved. He will show you how to vary your composition and change the camera’s position to accommodate the different stages of light as it becomes more intense.
