When photographing moving water, professional photographer Ian Plant says the photographer has two choices: you can either photograph moving water to stop the motion, or blur it artistically to suggest movement. In many photographs, you will find a way to have a mix of both stop action and blurred motion, and it’s the photographer’s responsibility to find the right mix for the mood he or she wishes to convey.
Tips for Flowing Water Photography
The right combination of camera settings and filters achieve different effects. Plant recommends how to photograph flowing water such as rivers, creeks, and large waves crashing against rocks, and will teach you ways to determine which settings to use based on how fast the water is moving. You will need to experiment with different settings and look at your results to determine the best combination for the effect you wish to achieve in your flowing water photography.
